Lisnagun Jig

By Brendan Ring. I transcribed this off Trouble In The Kitchen's EP "Down The Broom" and wrote in a couple of the variations they do. If you're like me and you like your trad albums to sound trad, you need to buy their music now (check out their album "When The World Was Wide"), and watch this space because they're making noises about touring Europe in the not too distant future.

I like this tune because it has a cheerful melody even though it has such a simple structure - not flashy but not boring. I will get their CD; i have only ever heard the guys playing on a SBS video recording some years ago.
Any idea what sort of a gun is a 'lisna'. Is it the sort of gun you point at people when you want them to listen. -☺- Ouch

Tony O'Rourke told me it's pronuounced something like LISH-na-gween...
Don't know what it means though.

Lios means a ringfort .
Con is related to the Irish word for hound ; Cúchullain is Cullen's Hound. It shares a common root with the word canine.

Liosnagun, then, is an anglicisation of Lios na gCon or "Fort of the Hound"

Mad Piper?

I think this is the same tune as the Mad Piper - except the Mad Piper is paid in G or Emin

Donough, you may be thinking of the Brendan Ring recording, Troublesome Things. Mr. Ring likes the tune so much, he records it twice on the sam CD! The first track is a medley of three tunes on whistle, closing out with the Lisnagun (Tyrell's Pass and the Coolinarne Jig are the others). Later he pairs it with Brian O'Linn on pipes.

Donough, Trouble In The Kitchen recorded it, and I assume you have their album, so maybe it's that.

You can hear this tune deftly executed on fiddle by out own 'pitnekit' (Marco Fonseca) on The MIghty Craic Online. He also plays it as a reel.

I learned this tune from Brendan Bulger's self-titled album, played in a set with Knocknagow. Great tune.

From Adam Smith ~ My brother got this from his accordion teacher, Adam Smith in Monkstown, Dublin yesterday. There was no name for it. It reminds me a little of Anthony Frawley's.
