Harvest Storm
As requested, this tune comes off of Altan's Best cd, track 15, in a set with the Donegal version of Drowsy Maggie, then Rakish Paddy, and finally Harvest Storm. I transcribed this from a taped copy, so I don't have the liner notes. Maybe someone could fill in any info on this tune, particularly the composer, if that's given.
Yet another fine example of a Donegal reel in A, played by Altan with their trademark fire and sparkle. Ciaran Tourish and Mairead Mhaonaigh play twin fiddles on this, and they veer around one another, one playing triplets, say, while the other hits a big drone note. This tune lends itself to that, and Ciaran heads for the lower octave the second time through the first half for a rich accompaniment to Mairead on the high end.
To get that Donegal sound, bow all the triplets (no slurring), and don't slur when crossing strings either.
Other variations:
Part A, 2nd measure, can be played without string crossings: |fege agfa|
Part B, last 2 measures can be played: |aAgA fAeA|GABc dfaf|
