Green Garters
This is a lovely reel and one of the first tunes I got off by heart. It is in O'Neill's 1001 No. 706. I have only ever heard it played with the parts as you have them reversed - which is as it is in O'Neill's. I use this tune every year in teaching breath control. I play through the whole tune on a single breath !!

Paddy Cronin's
This is the tune on the first track of Christy Dunne's "Pluckin' Good" album. He calls it Paddy Cronin's and has the parts reversed.

[* Note: dogbox's transcription, submitted as 'Blacksmith', was, as he admits, lifted from elsewhere. The transcription they'd given had the B-part repeating and making a tune of 24 bars long instead of the usual 16... As Kenny gives it, and inherent in the melody, I know it as a classic single reel... AND ~ it also works well as a highland fling... ~ 'c']

This is an old favourite of mine. I couldn't find it in the tunes database already, so here tis. Being a lazy sod, I found the tune using ~

Either "Buttons & Bows" or the Maguire brothers recorded this along with the "Blacksmith's" [ which I also posted ], and it looks to me as if the 2 titles have gotten mixed up.

"The Green Garters" ~ making sense of order ~ AABB
With the idea of the highland fling in this, or any classic single reel, it is easy to see which part would come first and last... The longer second ending, with a distinct 2-bar difference ~

~ says it all. This isn't a convention that would 'normally' be found in the A-part of a melody, in the middle. It is classically found in the conclusion, in this case, the order, AABB, as given by dogbox and as I know this melody...

The Blacksmith
I just found the tune in a CCE tunebook from the 1970s where its called An Gabha or The Backsmith. The parts are in the order described in the comments above and its a 16 bar reel, which is actually the way I play it.

They're both good as short 'filler' tunes and might share the same name, but they sound quite different on the recordings I've heard.

I sometimes play a c natural instead of c sharp in the last bar, I think I picked that up from Kevin Burke's DVD (can't remember what he calls the tune there, but it's this one, with the parts reversed).
