Clanranald

As somebody informs us this tune is what Deaf Shepherd recorded as "Clanranald," which was taken from Athole Collection. I haven't got Altan's album, but I guess it's named after the musician who they got the tune from.

Strangely enough, Altan recorded a completely different tune as "Clan Ranald" on "Runaway Sunday." According to the sleeve notes, they learned it from the recording of Cape Breton fiddler Bill Lamey, so it's quite probable they mixed up two tunes from the same source.

Anyway, I love the mysterious feel of the tune too. I'll probably make up a more flute-friendly version of the tune and post it later.

Bill Lamey

Errik, I'm just rephrasing what's written in the notes of some recordings. I didn't know anything about Bill Lamey, but it seems he's been an influential fiddler in the States and Nova Scotia: http://www.cranfordpub.com/recordings/Lamey.htm
Hmmm, Altan is a very interesting band. I think they do a lot of research to select nice Scottish or Cape Breton tunes.

Clan Ranald

The "Clan Ranald" on Altan's "Runaway Sunday" is actually "Nine Pint Coggie."

Mistery solved

Bill Lamey recorded a set with Bog an Lochain (Strathspey)/Clan Ranald (Reel)/Nine Pint Coggie(Reel), originally on a 78 recording. It was later published on an LP which is where Maired from Altan learned the tunes from, so obviously she messed up with the names.
I know this because I'm lucky enough to have Bill Lamey's recordings.
