Andrew Carr
AKA "Andrew Kerr" and "Andrew Carey". This very "foxhuntersy" slip jig was one of the first I ever learnt. A few centuries ago, this was one of those tunes that everyone plays (a bit like "The Maid Behind The Bar" is for us), and it appeared in practically every old manuscript in England, Scotland and Ireland. I'm not even sure where the tune originated - probably the Borders somewhere. Various versions of this are still played all over the British Isles, including Ireland.
This tune is also played in G, and some versions swap the parts. After much deliberation I've decided that I prefer this setting and key. If you play it in G, it means you can't go up high in the 2nd bar, so some versions go down instead like this: |g2e dBd dBd|g2e ege f2d|

B part
The Northumbrian version seems to have a changed B part nowadays (possibly due to High Level Ranters), with first and third bars

Quite possibly. It's recorded as "Tipperary Hills" by most other Irish artists though.
Here's a setting in G with the parts reversed from the William Vickers manuscript (1770):

Oh and if it is this tune that Altan did then it's apparently on "Another Sky", not "Blackwater". I've got Blackwater but not the other one - it's got too many songs and not enough tunes for a tune addict like me!

"Andrew Carr" ~ lyrics, does anyone know more?
As I went to Newcastle, My journey was not far,
I met with a sailor lad, His name was Andrew Carr.
And hey for Andrew, Andrew, Ho for Andrew Carr,
And hey for Andrew, Andrew, Ho for Andrew Carr.

"Scotland" / "The Yairds o' Finnigirth"
The Fiddler's Companion:
"It first appears as a country dance called "Scotland" in Playford (1709), and as a slower version in "The Yairds o' Finnigirth" from the Shetlands. The tune's title appears in Henry Robson's list of popular Northumbrian song and dance tunes ("The Northern Minstrel's Budget"), which he published c. 1800. Peter Kennedy gives the alternate English title “Derby Carey.” In Scotland it first appears in Daniel Wright’s A Collection of Scots Dances (1730) as “Andrew Kerr,” and Niel Gow included it in his First Repository of Scots Tunes. It has survived in Irish tradition as the slip jig “Hills of Tipperary” and “Tipperary Hills.” "
~ and it appears in numerous collections including Roche's...

Sorry, that 'Andrew' shouldn't have come out in stereo...

That Athole setting is nice, 'c', especially where it goes down to that E in the 2nd part, and those low A's @ the part endings.
