This is a tune from Shetland by Michael Ferrie (of Fiddlers Bid), a great talent who died very young of cancer. To me it has hints of an O'Carolan style to it. Excellent tune.

The ABC that reads:
ABd|:g6|d4 cB|A2 a3 g|fd cd ef (the beginning of the third part)
I have heard it played more often with a C sharp rather than a C natural in this bar:
|fd cd ef|
but I have only heard a fiddler from shetland, a fiddler whose been to shetland and Liz Doherty play it. Just out of interest, where'd you get this version from Errik.

Yes, great tune. I was thinking about putting it up myself but I'd been aware of slightly different versions and hadn't quite decided which would be the best to post. This one is quite close to what I play, though. Well done.

Its on the Liz Doherty album (on this site), but the connection / link hasn't been made to it for some reason.

Jamie- I heard it on Catriona MacDonald's "Bold" album, and a few fiddlers in Limerick playing it.

Liz tells a story about playing this tune at an after-hours session in Shetland along with a Scottish fiddler (perhaps the one she learned it from - my possibly faulty memory says it was Eilidh Shaw), both with eyes closed, totally absorbed in the tune. When they finished and looked up, everyone was in tears, having known Michael Ferrie.

Michael's Mazurka
Oh, many thanks to errik.
I met an authentic Northumbrian box player last year in Ireland, and she played this tune. It was just so touching....
It seems Catriona MacDonald's version is widely circulated, but I guess Fiddlers' Bid's version is close to the original because they used to play with Michael. Oh, I wish I were a fiddler....

Crikey, what's "an authentic Northumbrian box player". Can't says as I've ever seen one of those!

Michael's Mazurka
This is an excellent tune. I was taught this by Catriona McDonald at a summer school about 10 years ago now before she released it on her album.
