This tune, especially in the second part, is a bit similar to a Scottish jig "Hills of Glenorchy" (http://thesession.org/tunes/display.php/842).

Killavil?

Brother Steve says it's also known as The Killavil Jig, but I believe it's a mistake. The two tunes start with the similar phrases and are written in the same key, but they're different tunes.

I learned a slightly different version from a fiddler and have been playing it since then. The second part of it is pretty much the same as Brad posted here but the first part goes like this:

K: Edor
A|BEE dEE|BAG FEF|DED FDF|AFA d2c|
BEE BAB|def gfe|fdB AGF|GEE E2:|

I love the ascending phrase in the bars 3 and 4, and it's easier to play on many instruments, I guess.

More parts?

I recently heard a version of this tune with, I think four parts. I don't really know or play the other two parts, but I think they go something like...

A|:BdB cec|dfd ???(desending line)|D3 FEF|ABc d2A|BdB cec|def gfe|def g2a|bee e2:||
f|gef gef|gef gfe|dfe dfe|dfe def|edB def|gbc gfe|fdB AGF|GEE E2:||

Does anyone have these parts? I'd like to learn them.

Sorry

I'm still kind of a goof ball when it comes to dealing with abc. My repeats are all funktified.

The band Beginish recorded the 4-part version of the tune. They informed us the longer version comes from Johnny O'Leary. Gian Marco will transcribe it if you ask him.

???

What Cian recorded was "Trip to Killavil," not the tune called "Apples in Winter." Two tunes are completely different, even though some people seem to confuse them.

Michael Colman plays this

in an authoritative setting after "The Templehouse" on

It is called "Kennedy's Jig"

# Posted on July 5th 2005 by Ian Stevenson

Completely different

slainte is correct - Apples in Winter and Killavil though similar are two different tunes. Compare the Coleman setting pfraterdeus mentions with track 13 on the Molloy, Brady and Peoples.

I see in O'Neills 1001 that Ian is right about Kennedy's Jig being another name for Apples in Winter.
