Paddy Obrien's Return to Erin
Some years ago I used to perform with accodian master Paddy Obrien. Leaving for the road was always tinged with sorrow, but the return to our wives was always a joyous affair. I wrote this tune to reflect the great spirit of that returning.

Name of composer
Once again, may I point out that authorship of tunes cannot be correctly attributed if the composer line (C
is left out of the ABC notation. And, in this case, should we note the composer as "Squeegee"? Unless, of course, Squeegee prefers to remain anonymous.

Name of Composer
Erm, Squeegee's identity (Joseph Smith) is revealed in his bio. His screen name is evidently inspired by his pet dog.

Authorship
Of course the authorship can be properly attributed without the line "C:". You just write:
This tune was written by so-and-so.
It might sound crazy but some people actually find it *easier* to read plain English than ABC

Authorship
I don't disagree with you Jeremy but when someone downloads the ABC notation and then prints out the music authorship is lost unless it is included in the ABC notation or, as suggested earlier, written in afterwards. Why not use the program the way it was designed? When one learns about ABC one finds out what the different fields mean, no? And while I'm asking questions, why not provide more types of designations for tunes? I see tunes listed as hornpipes - then when I bring up the tune comments I find out they aren't hornpipes at all.
Okay, I understand that Squeegee's identity is in his bio but if the composer field were in the ABC notation I wouldn't have to search for it, would I?
I don't mean to be a complainer. I enjoy your site very much Jeremy and I get the feeling that you are a decent chap who won't get bent out of shape with a little constructive criticism.

Authorship, etc.
It's because of the way tunes are submitted.
When you click on "submit a tune", I want the process to be as simple as possible. That's why the headers are created automatically and all you have to enter is the "body" of the tune in ABC notation.
So instead of saying:
K:G
M: 6/8
L: 1/8
All you have to do is select "Jig" as the tune type and "Gmajor" as the key signature.
I realise that this means that you can't input just any kind of tune, but that's by design.
As for attributing authorship... frankly, if I thought that the majority of tunes on The Session needed to have that in the ABC headers then I'd have to have a long hard think about why this site is here.
The Session was set up to facilitate the transmission of *traditional* tunes. It's great when original tunes get passed along and assimilated into the tradition, but that's not what this site is about. That's why it's up to the person submitting an original composition to:
a) get permission to submit the tune
b) give credit in the comments
For the most part though, authored tunes are the exception, not the rule. That's why it makes sense not have authorship as part of the submission process. For the vast majority of tunes, it simply wouldn't apply.
