For the Sake of Old Decency

I learned this from Micheal Tubridy's excellent recording, The Eagle's Whistle, which I was going to post but someone else beat me to it. The tune is first in a set: For the Sake of Old Decency/Peata Beag Mo Mhathar/Gone for his Tea/It Goes as Follies.

I will post the rest of the set as soon as possible, they go really nice together.

For the Sake of Old Decency

BTW, those bottom D's in the second part are not notation mistakes. Michael actually plays it like that;after a little practice on the flute they flow naturally. I don't how hard it is to play on other instruments like the fiddle or accordion. You could probably transpose them up an octave.

This is the second reel from the first track of 'Briging the Gap' by Kevin and Sean Moloney. On the ablum it is listed simply as 'Gan Ainm.' According to the liner notes, the tune was played by Eddie Moloney (Sean's father) and Tommy Coen, both of East Galway.

Although I think that this is a reasonable approximation of the album, any corrections would be appreciated.

Goes well after Fr. O'Grady's Trip to Boca.

It seems the Tulla Ceili Band recorded and popularised the set of the D major version of this tune and the E dorian version of the Steampacket: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/7862

For the Sake of Old Decency (aka's P. Joe's)

PB, I have a very nice Plough session recording of you and Marla playing this in D, very similar to the version in the Comhaltas link above. Is that the key you usually play this in, or is G more common around these parts?

Martin hayes version

this tune is linked to the P. Joes on 'welcome here again' by martin hayes... i think that its quite a bit different, does anyone know the hayes version of it? thanks,

Martin Hayes version

The Martin Hayes version is just transposed down a fifth, so it starts on G in the key of C - if you play the fiddle, the C major version has exactly the same fingerings as the G major one, it's just played one string down. One or two measures are played and ornamented a little differently, though.
