Mac's Fancy, aka The Rover's Return

My setting has no C#s in the A-part, meaning that backers have the option of playing in Ador if they wish.

Great tune

I love this tune, but as I can't play by ear and don't know how to use the abc, is there any way that the dots can be added?

Cheers

Steve.

Ton up

Congratulations , Dow - I see you've just posted your 100th tune.
A good tune, too.

This tune has its origins in Scotland, as a 6/8 march, MacDonald of The Isles March to Harlaw. It's Irish foster parents have stripped both tune and title to their bare essentials.

Here is the march as it appears in Ceol na Fidhle, Vol. IV:

MacDonald Of The Isles March To Harlaw

Thanks for posting that David. Just one thing though - is there a bar missing out of rhe 2nd part or is it meant to be like that?

This one is #137 in O'Neill's Dance Music of Ireland and there called "The victor's return".

"Mac's Fancy" ~ DUPE-LIFICATION

Here's another transcript, cut from a very odd contribution, with the hopes that maybe that weirdness can go "POOF!""

"Phils Jig" / "MacDonald Of The Isles March To Harlaw" ~ duplication rescue

Key signature: ~ Originally submitted as Adorian, which it isn't, it is A Mixolydian

The following is trying to make sense of this duplication, which was a bit of a mess. The B-part in particular had too many bars and was off by a fraction of a beat, but it was different enough I thought I'd bring it forward, though it is quite similar to the one previous, from rogerf ~

& the notes from the previous ~ "Phil's Jig"

Phil's Jig ~ This is the first tune I've posted. I got Phil's jig from a former banjo teacher and I havn't heard it being played by anyone since and no one else in any session I went to seemed to know it.

For the first part, you can make those C#'s to C natural. Whatever takes your preference.

My teacher played the set Tenpenny Bit / Phil's Jig / Lilting Banshee

A supposedly rare tune to add to your repoitore maybe?

Comments welcome (hope I made no mistakes!).

Have fun playing!

Phil's Jig ~ Ascribed to fiddler Phil Neil Boyle of Arranmore Island . It is a version of Mac Donald of the Isles March.

Phil's AKA Mist Covered Mountain
('c' ~ which it ain't!)

This tune, listed as "Phil's Jig," can be heard in the Waltons 101 Fiddle Tunes collection.

Also it's on "Rattling Banjo's-100 Banjo Solo's" with David McNevin playing it under the title "Mist Covered Mountain." (Not to be confused with the other tune by that name.) ~
('c' ~ and obviously David McNevin was confused, or whoever wrote the notes...)
