Details ABC Sheetmusic Comments

I've known this tune for well over 30 years, having first heard it played by a very popular band in the south of England called 'The Yetties'. They learnt it from a fiddler friend who played nothing but Irish music. Since joining The Session I discover a tune called 'The Galtee Hunt' submitted Nov. 21st 2001. They are related with the 'A' music the closest. The version I have submitted should also be played at a pace slower than would be expected for a hornpipe and I reckon the speed to be around 100.
As 'The Galtee Hunt' I understand this to be a set dance tune.
I've not heard this played by anyone else since first hearing it so I am pleased to have the immediate information that the session has been able to give me upon submitting it.

Hetty, can you confirm that the rhythm of the 4th and 8th bars of the A-part, and of the 8th bar of the B-part, is correct. It seems unusual in that each of these bars is lengthened by two extra 1/16 notes (as dots to the first two notes of each bar). The effect is intriguing and would be guaranteed to puzzle all but the best rhythm players!

On reflection, that rhythm probably wouldn't puzzle the worst rhythm players either. They wouldn't notice it.

I would call this a set dance rather than a hornpipe - the length of the second part being twelve bars rather than the standard eight.

Incorrect bars

Hi Trevor, as you thought, the bars mentioned are incorrectly transposed here. Bar 4 in the 'A' music should read;- semi-quaver, dotted quaver, dotted quaver, semi-quaver. ditto in bar 8 and in bar 8 in the 'B' music. The result should be as found in a strathspey. I am using ABC2Win to transform my ABC notation into manuscript and midi at home before submitting it and used 1/8 as the default length. I had problems with these bars then and tried 1/16 as the default, amending the writing accordingly. This was successful but I had to use 1/8 when submitting it to the session. Look at the ABC and you should find it correct.
In bar two the top 'a' should read 'A' above middle C. On playing the 'B' music for the last time leave out the triplet and finish on G.

I have discovered what was wrong with the problem bars. The < sign was put in the wrong place. I have now ammended the ABC so all should be correct.

Set dance

The Hunt is definitely a set dance and can be found in O'Neill's 1001 Tunes Book (Tune No. 976). It's a much nicer tune than the variant known as the Mount Phoebus Hunt played in parts of West Clare.

Whistle and Sing?

If I remember correctly, the Boys Of The Lough recorded this tune or something very similar on one of their CD's or albums several years ago.
