Cheat River

A fun little tune from the mountains of Western Maryland where the tune was once a common dance piece. Now it survives in hammered dulcimer sessions around the Mason Dixon line. The "A" part has several variations documented with similarities to "The Devils Dream" and the "B" part is reminiscent of the Scottish "Bonny Breast Knot" and other common strains.

Cheat River

I was born within a couple miles of the headwaters of this mighty river formed from the waters of Blackwater, Dry Fork and Shavers Fork all of which were my whitewater playgrounds. Before I took up music.

More on the Cheat

Yes, definitely named after the real river... a once very common tune in West Virginia and SW Pennsylvania too. This arrangement offers some fun jumps in the melody... each player I've run into seems to have their own twist on the theme.
