Sept Temps is not a jig!
This is a great tune, and a bit of a challange to learn! It is not a jig. I just had to put that down, otherwise it wouldn't go through. It is in 7/8 time. I believe it is traditional French. The way you count 7/8 is: 1,2,3 1,2 12, 1,2,3, 1,2, 1,2, stressing the 1 ineach group.I don't suggest trying to learn it and tap your foot at the same time. Once you know it well, you will tap naturally this odd rythm. When playing it, stress the first note of each group. If you are playing it on the fiddle, it helps greatly to change bow strokes for each group. It also sounds really good played (on the fiddle) starting on the A string, which gives it a sort of middle eastern quality, especially if you bow more lightly and nearer the bridge!

It is essential when playing 7/8 that all the eighth notes are each the same length; the first three notes should not be played as a triplet in the time of two notes otherwise the effect is ruined.
The same applies to other non-standard time signatures (5/8, 11/8 etc) that come up sometimes, usually in Eastern European music.

C major or A minor?
The tune seems more like it's in A minor to me...but maybe I just haven't heard it with the "right" chords underneath it?
In either key, it's a great tune! I love these 7/8 tunes!

I think the ABC and sheet music say "6/8" despite the tune being in 7/8 because the ABC software takes the time signature from the tune type - jigs are in 6/8 as far as it is concerned - and the sheet music is printed out from the ABC.

I just typed a 7/8 tune in my copy of abcwin2,I entered "jig" as the tune type,and I got a 7/8 time signature.

It probably is in Aminor, I'm not very good at reading the key signatures yet. Sorry! The reason it says 6/8 on the ABCs and sheetmusic is because when I entered the tune I had to put a tune type, and there was no 7/8.

Which abc program are you using?My point was that with the program that I use you can put "jig" in tune type,but still enter a 7/8 time signature.
