There is an A maj version in O'Neill, which sounds just a little weird in that key. I just wonder if that was another case of the O'Neill transcriber not really understanding modal tunes and trying to force it into the default major. Any comments from the experts on this hypothesis?

A mix...
could work. Sometimes, people write out pieces in only either the "standard" major or minor and then use accidentals to get the real mode across. If the A major wasn't a simple mistake (for A minor with F sharps written for dorian, perhaps), the transcriber may have been intending A mix (written in A major, but accidentally forgetting the G nat accidentals!). A major just sounds weird to me without some serious alterations, but A mix isn't too bad. That being said, I prefer the dorian.

Yes, I know what you mean. When I usually give the O'Neill I tend to leave it as found...
