Would anyone like to post in abc the Liz and Yvonne Kane version of this tune? They have a slightly different B part than the one I have learned. Will, maybe? ;o)

I've never heard Kane sisters playing this tune, but some people play Paddy O'Brien's version of this tune in Dm, which has a little bit different second part.

I found Paddy O'Brien's version of the tune in Dm is available at JC's ABC tune finder. I guess Kane sisters play almost identical version. Sorry, if not.

Kane Sisters version

Andee, here's the rough draft of what Liz and Yvonne play for the opening time through the tune. I haven't listened to this as much as I usually do with a tune before playing it back, so I'm undoubtedly missing some stuff. But it'll get you started.

Er, that would be X: 1, T: Man of the House. It's late, I'm asleep, just not in bed....

Yeah, that's Paddy O'Brien version. Will's transcription is almost identical to what Devin McCabe trascribed from Paddy O'Brien's playing.

Thanks loads Will and Slainte!! Can't wait to get started on learning this setting....!

# Posted on June 13th 2004 by Andee

Andee, I didn't do anything. All the thanks to Will. I don't know why, but the Dm setting is played more often in Leeds, Yorkshire. Whenever I hear it, I say "damn!" in my head. I mean "what a nice version!" and "no, you should play Em one for flautists."

For fiddlers at least, it's definitely worth knowing both the Em and Dm settings of this tune.

Going on a Stroll with the Man of the House

So I've been tinkering with this one lately on fiddle and tenor banjo, enjoying some minor melodic detours, and this is where I keep returning to:

X: 1
T: Man of the House
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
K: E dor
|: E2 BE GABG | E/E/E BG FDAF | E2 BE GABe |1 dBAF BAGF :|2 dBAF BEEB ||
| efge fgaf | gfed edBd | ef g/f/e fgaf | gfed Beed |
| efge fgaf | gfed efga | bg a/g/f gfed | edBA GEFD ||

The B part also comes out like this:

| efge fgaf | gfed ed B/c/d | efge fgaf | gfed Be e/e/e |
| efge fa{b}af | gfed ef g/g/a | bg{a}gf gfed | B/c/d BA GEFD ||

Set?

i was wondering what tunes night go good with this in a set. i was thinking maybe drowsy maggie? any other suggestions? what do other ppl play?

Set

Coolfin plays "Miss Monaghan" before this reel, which makes a nice set. How about "Bird in the Bush" or "Within a Mile of Dublin" after it? If you play pipes, "Jenny's Wedding" might be a better choice.

Dm Version

Paddy O'Brien actually recorded it with James Kelly and Daithi Sproule. It's just superb.

There is a rousing version of this tune played by the "house" musicians at Oliver St. John Gogarty's on the CD "Gogarty's-A Pecade On." It's played as an instrumental break in the middle of the ballad "Molly Bawn"

I do a set of this, Rakish Paddy and the Flogging. It's like it gradually lifts in mood..
