..."the modal nature and flowing quality of 'Thompson's' suggest that it comes from County Gallway..." (Dan Gelo).
A couple notes about this tune:
1.) The A section is in Amaj, but note that the B section switches keys to Cmaj...I included the (hopefully helpful) chords to emphasis that.
2.) This tune can also be written out in just Cmaj, eliminating of course, all the naturals in the A section...reading it in Cmaj is a bit easier for me, since you have just a couple sharps to deal with rather than all those naturals. I'll paste the ABC for the alternate Cmaj version below.
3.) And not so important.......On guitar, I like playing the E chord writen in the last bar of the tune as Emin on the second beat of the second to the last bar of the tune....just sounds nicer that way....adds a bit more tension before returning to the A section....I wrote that change in on the alternate Cmaj only ABC version below.

On the mode, I'd write it in A dorian--it clearly resolves to A, with c nats predominating. Since there aren't any F's, you could plunk it into A minor as well. Just mark the handful of c sharp accidentals.

This tune is played by an American guitar player ,Eric Thompson, on a mainly Bluegrass L.P. He says, on the cover, that he had been playing it for years and it was only when he was " going thru" O'Neills that he found out it had the same name as himself.
Worth looking out for, but I don't know if it was ever released on C.D.
