I'm the composer...
...and the title is really "Tricky Reel", not "Tricky Tune". The key is Gm, not Gdor. I composed it on mandolin on Dec 27, -99. Since then people have pointed out similarities with Charlie Lennon's "Kilty Town". Which I don't play.
I usually put it together with two other compositions of mine, both in Gm.
I'd like to hear comments from all of you, especially you who have included it in your repertoire

I came across this tune whilst browsing and found it very intriguing. I think for me to really take to it, it'd have to be simplified a bit, which would presumably defeat the whole point of it! Specifically, I would want to take out the bluesy bit at the start of the B-part, and also get rid of that descending sequence at the end of the B-part, which I find a bit gimmicky (sorryyyy!). If not "get rid of", then I feel as though it should at least become a 2nd time ending, otherwise it's a bit much. That's being really picky though...

Thanks for the comments, Dow. I very seldom compose tune with "2nd time endings", but your suggestion is not a bad one. Which is your instrument? I composed the tune on mandolin and it works equally well on fiddle, and guitar for that matter (melody, DADGAD-tuning).
As for your transposing, I've had problems with Amin/Ador on just any instrument for the past 7-8 years, really. But feel free to play it your way if you want.
For what it's worth, Paul Kelly included the tune in "110 Irish Mandolin Tunes Volume 1", original key but some off-notes here and there.

An attractive tune, Jeff_.
But I would use Gm (eolian mode) throughout, leaving the e naturals and other accidentals where you wrote them in. Giving it a nice baroque flavour, 'Bachian' even towards the end.
And I'd get rid of that not so groovy cromatic fall in the 2d part, replacing it with, say, |:~G2g^f g=fdB|cAGF GABd... : perhaps a bit common but not hackneyed.
This 'reel' has strong down beats and could easily be seen a hornpipe. This feature becomes obvious if you 'test' the tune by playing it in GMaj.
