Muireann's Jig
A phat tune written by Niall Vallely. I got this not from his album he did with his brother but direct from the playing of our local uilleann piper who has just learnt it, and has played it to bb and me at the last few local sessions. Notice that it's pentatonic - it shifts between Bmin and Dmaj pentatonic scales, so if you're a backer you can have great fun with chords.

Pronunciation?
I love this tune and it gets played
with some regularity around here.
Unfortunately, some of the more
*challenged* guitar players cannot
seem to grasp that change to D.
Incidentally, how does one pronounce
Muireann? We have sadly been
reduced to calling it Moron's Jig
and I'm sure Niall would not be happy!

Regarding Muireann's Jig
How does one pronounce this?
At our session we unfortunately
end up calling for Moron's Jig
and I'm sure Niall would not approve!

Re: Regarding Muireann's Jig
Isn't it the Irish form of Marianne?

Re: Regarding Muireann's Jig
I suppose it is but I doubt it's pronounced the same.
I actually heard Niall and Cillian play this and Niall
introduced it but I wasn't listenening for it and missed
his pronunciation!

Perhaps?

Re: Regarding Muireann's Jig
yes, Maureen is probably more like it.
We'll go with that for now.
Thanks!

I know a girl by the name of Muireann and she pronounces it Mur - een or something like that.

Pronunciation of Muireann
Tá aithne agam ar cháilín dárb ainm Muireann agus fuaimníonn sí an t-ainm mar Mwir'aN.
I know a girl who goes by that name and she pronounces it Mwir'aN (slender r - slightly like a rolled /r/ in Spanish, but much more clipped. Broad n at the end. The vowel between the two is more like a schwa, or a neutral vowel - I don't believe there's a scwhwa symbol on my keyboard- Once again, a clipped neutral vowel sound would suffice here).

Murieann
My Gaelic Pronounciation is so awful, but I think that An Deargn has it right. It's close to Mur- e- ann but the middle vowel is almost not heard.
Anyway, I assume that everyone knows that it's Niall and Karan's beautiful daughter? I have posted a picture from last March here http://nickensforohio.com/muireann.jpg
That's my daughter Anita on the left and Murieann in the red sweater on the right.
We just adore Karan, Niall and the whole crew. Not only are they fabulous musicians but really wonderful people (a rare combination!)

Spent my lunchbreak learning this one from a CD of bb-selected tracks and it was the most productive and useful thing I've done all day.
The only difference on the recording is that in the C part, bars 3 and 4 are |DAA ABB|Bdd edB| rather than |DAA DBB|Ddd edB|. Gives it a little bit more upward momentum at that point, to my (novice) ear.

Hi Tish! Yes I transcribed that bit according to how our piper plays it. I quite liked the variation, and the other version of those 2 bars can be found elsewhere on the net. Do whatever sounds best on your fiddle.

Agreed, Dow - the variation is nice and even sounds, dare I say it, a little more Irish? It's good either way.

Dearg's pronunciation..
... is closest, although in Donegal Irish you'd hear it without the "w" sound after the "M"
