The Old Reel

This tune, which I know as "the old reel" came from the patrick street album "street life". It is one of the smoothest sweetest melancholic reel which has great simplicity and is played fast with little that isn't slurred. It is a great tune. A friend of mine reckons it is a tune of Scottish origin. It is followed "street life" by a quite different version of drowsey maggie.

I'm fairly certain it's a Scottish tune - I think there are a few tunes one tune in the Athole collection - both reels and strathspeys - to which it bears a resemblance. It sounds like a cousin of the old Scots Border song, Ca' the Yowes tae the Knowes.

Chuir I Gluin Air A Bhodach

This tune - which Patrick Street play as 'The Old Reel' is originally a strathspey called Chuir I Gluin Air A Bhodach which translates as 'She put her knee on the old man' . See Ceol Na Fidhle (The Fiddle Music of the Scottish Highlands) Vols 5 and 6 p.83

Ossian recorded a different reel called "The Old Reel." Does anybody know it?

Chuir I gluin was originally a very old pipe reel (see Skye Collection). The Ossian tune is the Scottish (original?) version of the Bunch of Keys
