Paddy Mill's Fancy
This one is for Gian Marco, as we've both recently posted a tune from Desi Wilkinson's"Three Piece Flute" recording. This fine reel is on it too. Tara Diamond, a great flute-player from Belfast, taught this to a Willie Clancy flute class in the mid-80s.Not only that, but she also got hold of the composer, fiddle-player Paddy Mills from Mayo, who was around that week, and got him to come along to the class to play us his original version, which is the version I have posted. It is a popular session tune in Ireland these days, especially with flute-players, but I'm not sure if it's that well-known abroad.
As well as Desi, "Skylark" and concertina player Terry Bingham have recorded it, although they all have slightly different versions of the tune. Beware in sessions - sometimes the 2nd part the 2nd time round goes back to the last 4 bars of the first part- if that makes sense (Skylark play it like that )- but that's not how the composer played it to the class. Enjoy!

Telepathy ?
No telepathy, Gian Marco - although the same thing happened to me about a week ago when Dow ( I think it was) posted "The Cloone" just before I did. You also did the same yourself with "Sergeant Early's Dream",so we're even now .I have a reel from Patsy Hanly you might like- watch this space.
Incidentally, the version of "Paddy Mills" you have posted is more commonly played and more likely to turn up in sessions than the original. All the best.

This version, instead of repeating the B-part, reverts to the second strain of the A-part for lthe last 8 bars.
I had the pleasure of meeting Paddy Mills last year in Milltown Malbay. Knowing his name, but not much else about him, I played him the above version of the tune. His face lit up and he began playing along - I noticed that he played the B-part differently. I told him I had got the tune form Skylark, to which he replied, "Yes, they got it wrong." He wrote them a letter to tell them and they sent back a letter of apology.
So, if you ever meet Mr.Mills, don't play the setting I've just posted.
