Kilnamona Barndance

As played by Martin Hayes on Under the Moon. Coming from Bill Malley's, this makes a wonderful key change from G to F major, an unusual key for Irish trad and not the most common key for fiddlers and other trad players. Measures 1 and 5 of Part A take a little practice but are well worth the trouble...remember to keep your bowing motions small and calm to smoothly navigate those string crossings. I play this with a fair amount of swing, to the point of sounding like a polka, sliding into those "d"s in measure 3 of Part A and the final low "F"s on Part A. Enjoy!

In D

How about playing it in D? We had this playing on the CD around the house, so I picked up the whistle and it seemed to start nicely on an A, finishing on D's. Nice contrast in this tune.

Source for this tune?

Anyone know anything about the source of this tune? It isn't in my O'Neill's, which is the Krassen "corrected" one.

# Posted on March 14th 2008 by tedsoulos

Gerdie Commane

The source for this tune was the late Gerdie Commane, a concertina player from Kilnamona, Co. Clare. I believe that John Williams of Chicago was the first to record the tune, and is responsble for giving it the title. I don't know if Martin Hayes learned it from John or directly from Gerdie Commane. Gerdie was recorded, along with the late fiddler Joe Ryan, on the "Two Gentlemen from Clare" CD produced by Eoin O'Neill.
