I know this as a Sea Shantey. Windlass or pumps, the usual heaving work. Lots of variants available. Check Mudcat or the aother usual suspects if you're really curious. Now I gotta try this as a Jig!

When I first learned this tune it was reel. It is very interesting to see it as a jig, but I tend to like the reel version more.

Pete Seeger's version

I remember hearing a Pete Seeger recording of this tune performed as a song. The title must have been "Working on the Railway" or "Fillime-or-re-or-re-ay" since both were in the chorus. It was a favorite of my youngest sister who loved to hear me sing it. (Having someone who loved to hear me sing has not happened again.)

The song began:

In eighteen hundred and forty one,
I put my corduroy breeches on,
I put my corduroy breeches on,
to work upon the railway

chorus:

Fillime-or-re-or-re-ay
Fillime-or-re-or-re-ay
Fillime-or-re-or-re-ay
to work upon the railway

(more upon request).
