Craniota's recent tune submission "The Dove on the Gate" (http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/1458) had a vaguely familiar feel to it. A search found the Saratoga reel, which I think I must have heard at a workshop or session some time ago, The first bar of "The Dove on the Gate" is the same as the first bar of the B part of the Saratoga, and that was the source of the vaguely familiar feel, but there the resemblance between the two tunes ends. I introduced the tune to a session, nobody knew it, but it went down well. Thanks Craniota for pointing me to this lovely reel!

The Saratoga seems to be one of those reels which can easily turn into a hornpipe without you noticing, and in fact I personally prefer it as a hornpipe. The repeated low E's in the B part cry out for strong ornamentation, and I would suggest a really tight roll or triplet on the 2nd beat of bars 1,2,3,5,and 6 of the B part.

Saratoga hornpipe

Trevor, I agree with you. I prefer Saratoga as a hornpipe.

...or maybe just a long roll over the 2nd, 3rd and 4th beats of the bars mentioned above.
Trevor, you might be also thinking of the Pigeon which is on an only slightly different gate from the one which Gian shows us the dove is now on.

Kenn, you could be right, perhaps the obvious one never occurred to me! Anyway, the Saratoga a fine tune in its own right.

There is in fact a hornpipe called the Saratoga - a different tune entirely. It appears in some book of Scottish session tunes, of which I don't have the details to hand.
