Another version
This is a version I learned a couple of years ago from the legendary accordeonist Mairtin O'Connor. I like this tune a lot, perhaps because of it's simple beaty and power.

Whelan´s and the Mooncoin
A band called Wild Asparagus from Mass, USA plays a really nice set with the Mooncoin Jig into Whelans. The change is really nice and I love the mooncoin!

Aileach
I heard this tune played by Aileach in a set called Jigs of Aileach 2 on a compilation album. It is a great set. Does anyone know the names of the other tunes in the set or any information on Aileach?

Tommy Whelan
He was a flute player and a member of the Ballinakill Traditional Dance Players, from East Galway. He is mentioned in a biography of Lucy Farr (http://www.mustrad.org.uk/articles/farr.htm) and an interview with Mike Rafferty (http://www.firescribble.net/flute/rafferty3.htm) No idea how he sounded like, but Sean Moloney, a grandson of Stephen Moloney, who was another flute player of the band, remarked "He [Tommy Whelan] was a big influence on the flute playing style of that area including my father" (sleeve notes of Sean's recording "Potsticks") Thankfully, you can listen to Eddie Moloney play a few tunes on Rich Lafferty's Flute Tape Page: http://www.lafferty.ca/music/irish/flute-geezers As you see, Eddie's style is pretty much like Mike Rafferty's.
