Touching Cloth

According to the liner notes on Dervish's End of the Day cd, this snappy reel was written by fiddler James Kelly. So I've posted it here as played by Kelly with Zan McLeod on a track I got from Zina (and I'm hoping she'll post the discographic info here).

Dervish does this tune in the more flute and whistle friendly key of D maj, with a slightly different approach as well:

T: Touching Cloth

Ah, Zina enlightened me that the James Kelly cd is The Ring Sessions. There you have it.

I'll post it when I get back from class this evening!

Lovely tune!

The Title

Amusing title! Are you aware of what it actually refers to?

# Posted on February 6th 2003 by LongNote

LongNote, I've wondered about that. Evertyhing springs to mind from priests' garments to the old bundle sack, where a young man would be stitched into a bag when sleeping at his fiance's house. What gives?

Hahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!

Vulgar but true

"It's touching cloth" is a phrase you use when you really need to "go". I heard it first played by Ciaran Tourish who paired it with a reel he said was called "Sitting on the Throne". Now, aren't you glad you asked?

Hahahahahaha!!!!!! That turtle rears its ugly head again :-D

Both this one and "Sitting on the Throne" were written by James Kelly. I was surprised that James used such vulgar titles as he is such a getntleman!

In my family, they say "I'm crowning," as in giving birth. :o)

Yes, on The Ring Sessions, James Kelly follows Touching Cloth with Sitting on the Throne. This explains it all. Reminds me of a tune I wrote while working for the Forest Service called the Giardia Jig, in honor of the little dance you do when you get amoebic dysentery. The jig is, of course, in Bm....

Thanks LongNote--my second belly laugh of the day!

I wonder if that explains why he called the album the RIng Sessions?

This place gets more like a real world session every day.... :o)

A Substitute for the Bucks of Oranmore

I've been lazy and avoiding learning the Bucks of Oranmore, but I can try this one first. Thanks Will for D major version.

So Will, I don't suppose I could talk you into doing a post of Sitting on the Throne, too, so it all matches? :)

Yiz are all...

"durty bastes", as my ma would say!

# Posted on February 6th 2003 by ConĂ¡n McDonnell

And that latest candidate for deification, Will Harmon, has indeed posted Sitting on the Throne for your general edification: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/1416

"sitting on a pinnacle" is another term for this phenomenon and would be a great tune title
