This version from Fiddlesticks

This is the second mazurka from the set on the Fiddlesticks CD entitled "Two Mazurkas". (See previous post under this title). Easy to play but they make a good set with Sonny's mazurka in D.

Vincent Campbell's Mazurka

This is the other Vincent Campbell mazurka - the first was posted last year at http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/1276. Most mazurkas I've heard always seem to be strong on melody and make a nice change between the reels and jigs at a session - at least once during the night!

The beginning sounds alot like St. Anne's.

Previously submitted to this site some time ago as the first of two mazurkas entitled "Phroinsias" as played on the cassette "Fiddlesticks", played by Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh and Phroinseas O'Maonaigh. No doubt this is where the person who submitted it got the name from so I am pleased if the name given here is the correct one and will amend my copy accordingly.
This notation is only very slightly different from mine in bars 3 & 4. the notes being, quaverquaver (joined), crotchet, quaverquaver(joined). Each bar accordingly. Sorry have not learned how to do ABC yet. Bar 5 I have as DBD BD. Does that make sense? hope so. The second Phroinseas tune is very similar to Tommy People Mazurka.

It also appears on Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh and Frankie Kennedy's "Ceol Aduaidh." The second one of Mazurkas Phroinsias Ui Mhaonaigh (Francie Mooney's).

I accept that the third and fourth bars are different to Altan's version but I got this setting some years ago from Siobhn Peoples and I prefer her version - it's just a case of personal preference.

Another variation

Thanks to ceolachan for putting this into ABCs for me, as I don't know how! This is the version I have, but unfortunately, I have no idea whatsoever, how I came to have this B part. I don't know where I got the tune from; it must have got into my head by osmosis from somewhere, and I may have learned the B part this way, or altered it by not remembering the B part accurately - I really don't know. So if anyone does know this version, please let me know where from! It sounds like a variation on the tune given here, anyway.

And here's the B part!

Sorry - only pasted half of it into the last post...

And to further complicate matters...

I've just realised that the version given here isn't quite my version, as it incorporates variations made by piper Colman Connolly. Anyway, there you go - variations on variations! :-)

- another mad version of this -

I've found this in this higher register also, in various forms, here's one with some 'play' in it:

d>e|f2 f>e d>B|A2 F2 A2|B2 G2 B2|A>F A2 d>e|
f2 f>e d>B|(3ABA F>A F>A|B2 c>B A2|d3 A d>e|

|f>A d>f a>f|g>f g2 A>c|e>A c>e g>e|f>A d>F A>d|
f2 (3Adf a>f|g4 A>c|e2 e>g f>e|d4 (3Ade|
f2 f2 a>f|g2 g2 A>c|e2 e2 g>e|f2 f2 A>d|
f>A d>f (3agf|g>f e>d c>B|A>G F>E D>C|D4||

naff ending...and I think once would be enough, the last time through a set maybe...

Scotch schnapps

There's a connection with the English song Blow The Wind Southerly, as became evident to me when a piano accordion player, relatively new to Irish music, played the air to that song as a waltz, at The Adelaide in London a few weeks ago.

I usually play this mazurka in D, I think. But that might well just be by association with St. Annes Reel, to which, as Aiki points out, it is also related (not just the beginning - all the way through). It could sound nice with a few Scotch snaps thrown into the A-part - or perhaps more 'Ulster snaps', since the Donegallers tend to play them less snappy than the Scots:

K: Dmaj
de|:f2fedB|A<F A2FA|B<G B2BG|A<F A2de|
f2fedB|A<F A2FA|B2c2A2|d4de:|

You could probably fit some into the B-part as well, but knowing that the placement of snaps can be a sensitive issue, I'll save myself the possible embarrassment of misusing them.
