Liam O'Flynn's version

THis is supposed to be Liam's version of this nice hornpipe on his first recording from 1988 (no title). Of course there are a lot of variations and decorations on the recording, but the abc is a good point to start with the tune. Nice regulators on the recording, too.

I've corrected an error in the 3rd part bar3 , of course there is no repeat sign necessary there.

The bank of turf hornpipe

Another very nice version of this tune was played on the concertina by John Kelly senior under the title of 'The blacksmith's charm'. It is distinguished by a striking first octave F natural in the first part,
It was on the Topic album 'John Kelly Fiddle And Concertina Player', recently re-released as a CD.

The Bank Of Turf (hornpipe)

This is one of two possible tunes referred to in the following story:

"When no manuscript paper was available Padraig [O'Keeffe] would improvise by drawing the lines for the tablature using his bow as a ruler. On one famous occasion he met Denis Murphy who was cutting turf. Denis wanted to learn a particular tune and so Padraig drew lines on the turf and marked out the notes. Denis named the tune "The Bank of Turf" in consequence..."
(Music from Sliabh Luachra by Alan Ward, 1976)

The other tune of the same name - which could be the subject of the story - is the jig, also known as "Padraig O'Keeffe's" http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/1819 but, according to Alan Ward, it is "more normally linked with a three-part hornpipe": i.e., this tune.

The sheet music seems to have gone awry in the third part somehow, but the ABC version looks OK.
