I used to hate these tunes in flats...

and then i got a flute with keys!

Some folks in the session were playing this the other day. It's a nice melody, and fits very comfortably in the keyed flute. Fiddlers, of course, have no problems with flats. I can almost play it in one of my more half-holing, note-bending whistles. A real whistler should be able to do it as long as it isn't too fast. Those couple of F#s and E-nats sure help.

This is from O'Neill, by the way. 1112 in Music of Ireland and 306 in Dance Music of Ireland (1907).

Ornaments

I roll those long Gs and put the accent on the d (ta-blah-vlah-dah-DEE!). :-)

The 3rd part seems too cute to be authentic, especially being just a variation on the 1st part. But what do i know, i just play this stuff!

This is a great tune! We paired it with Jump at the Sun (same key, same book) and it's quite haunting on the concertina. Well, more creepy really, but it works for us.

Jump

Trinil, Jump at the Sun isn't in O'Neill. The version that's showing in the Tune Finder says it's by John Kirkpatrick, in 1972. (Still looks like a nice pairing with Crabs, though.)

Jump

Whoops! My mistake. I got them from a band member in a packet of (mostly) O'Neill tunes. Guess my memory recall needs a little work. :D It is a nice pairing, though, I hope we get the arrangement polished and ready soon.

Cheers

Just learning this now on the harp. We (my teacher and our harp orchestra) are teaming it up with and playing it after Planxty Burke.

Crabs in the Skillet

Here's a version from Liz and Yvonne Kane's album "The Well Tempered Bow."

Crabs in the Skillet

Shouldn't this be Gdor instead of Gmin?

The only Eflat I play is actually where errik placed the natural in that optional variation on the C part.

A real whistler should be able to do it as long as it isn't too fast....

Heh... I think Breda Smyth blew away the "rule" about not playing half holes too fast on whistle when she did Bachelor's walk....
