It's not a barndance!

We (me and the wife) arranged this as a violin due for a friend's wedding. It sounded OK, so thought I might as well share it!

It would be good to see this survive, but ~ your ABCs are a bit of a mess... It might have been better to have first submitted this to 'discussion' and get some of us to work on cleaning it up and putting it into a usable from. The gaps do not work here, generally... Also, there are certain conventions now the norm in ABC notation, as well as what would be considered just good consistent practice.

I'm caught in another project right now but will try to see if I can help later... Here's one possibility, just give the first violin part, the basics, and then add the second violin part here in the comments, or present it in ABC format using the brackets, for example, first bar ~ z2 [B2d2] [B3d3] [ce] | ~

Still learning...

Hi, thanks for pointing out the problem.

The line feeds weren't present in the file which I uploaded, so I've edited the abc and removed them - hope it works OK now.

Would you mind pointing out what "conventions" and "good practice" I could improve on?

I just wrote it out using the online Montreal Tunebook editor, and it looks OK there:

Thanks for the comments,
David

Sorry dwne, I haven't been able to free up much time to give your ABCs their just attention. The various software out there is not consistent, despite there being conventions, each spits out its own way and has some non-standard items. Here are three guides on the subject of ABC notation and the usual conventions ~

http://www.lesession.co.uk/abc/abc_notation.htm
http://abcnotation.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abc_notation

Much of what you have is specific to that software and pretty much useless everywhere else, too much, simple is best and that is where ABC notation began, way back before the late 20th Century computer boffins adopted it as an ascii code for the dots...

If it ain't here then it is superfluous, and anything that says 'proposed', well, it isn't yet recognized... The only 'v' currently accepted and in use is for bow direction, down... That doesn't stop the software developers from creating their own additional code, of which there is much... Anything above X: 1 on your transcription, here, is useless, means nothing, and would never fit on a beer coaster either... As is often said in all walks of life and with interests and passions ~ keep it simple...

Your basics work here too ~

So they might be alright here too, fingers crossed...

Removing those gaps was a good move...

Best of luck. I hope it works and lasts...

Hallelujah! Success....

"Ar Lan Y Mor"

It looks like you had the grace of intervention as well from our webmaster, unless you'd done all the clean up on that transcription... We don't have many two part arrangements on site here...

Now one of us will have to whip up a transcription for the basic melody too, as generally taken in Cymru for example...

"Ar Lan y Môr" ~ Cerys Matthews takes a different way with it

A favourite voice of ours...

And another way with it courtesy ofd Sian James and her harp ~

& the locals down the pub ~ :-D

Curious, who in Cymru would need sheet music for this one? They must be incomers or city folk...

"Ar Lan Y Môr" ~ 3/4

Finally, a little free time to fart around.

I think this is usually taken in 3/4 time. Here is this transcription, just for first violin, adjusted to 3/4 time, not counting for possible fermatas and the end of phrases ~

"Ar Lan Y Môr" ~ 4/4 ~ keeping the integrity with a '-' here & there 8-)

Another way to look at those bars and keep the 4/4 integrity of the tune. I cut-and-pasted an earlier take ~

One could also move the bars one step back, creating lead-in notes and changing the emphasis, for example ~
