Bonnocks of Beer Meal
S:McGibbon - Scots Tunes, Book II, pg. 34 (c. 1746)

Amazing Scots tune composed by William McGibbon and recorded by Chris Norman and David Greenberg recently on their cd "Let Me In This Ae Night"

This is the first 3/4 strathspey I've ever seen... Something is seriously wrong with this transcription. It's not 4/4 as you've written it, and the layout of the phrasing is all over the place... Take a look at some other strathspeys on site for some guidance...

3/4 air ~ waltz for the proper time signature...
It's a 3/4 time air, and it would be best put in under waltzes. As suspected, it's not a strathspey, and it's not in 4/4 time...

Hmmmm! Are you sure this is what they played? There are some weird problems with this transcription you lifted from 'Fiddler's Companion'. Here it is simplified so you might see for yourself. I take it you're not actually playing this yet yourself? Maybe you should get a hand on a tune, learn it, and then do your own work and contribution rather than blindly cutting and pasting from somewhere else ~ especially if you haven't played through it and checked it out first...

Never mind the Bonnocks
It's not a strathspey, it's not a waltz, and I don't think it's even a 3/2 hornpipe, though to my mind that's the closest in flavour.
If it is what it seems to be, an Air with variations, it doesn't fit the categories offered here (I would offer more categories, but it's not my site).
Also, I don't know if it's by McGibbon - the setting, if it's accurate, probably is, but not the tune.
Bonnocks is more usually spelt Bannocks.

I believe this tune can also be found in "Airds" as a 3/4 but I don't think it was put in a category.
Made plenty of Bannocks in the past but never used Beer Meal, although I have had the odd beer meal in the past

Me too Iain, and good to see Matt about. Yes, I too love bannocks, and I wish I'd thought to use mash for baking when we used to do home brewing. Barley would add a lovely extra earthiness to bannocks, especially those that had been used for brewing beer...

Errors
Hi!
I'm sorry if I bothered anybody with the setting and did not think it was going to create such impression. According to the album's comments it is a Song with Variations so Strathspey was the closest I thought might do. Maybe I should chage it fir Waltz instead.
I do intent to play it some day but haven't worked on it yet. Once I've done my homework I will include the version I think it's played on Chris&David's cd too. If anyone thinks or has a better version so far please upload it. I can't remember where I got this one from as I cannot find it on the fiddler's companion site either.

Tune/Variations composer....McGibbon?
According to the comments on Boxwood site McGibbon did not composed the tune but only the variations:
"Though a prolific composer, McGibbon apparently did not write any tunes in the folk music genre, aside from variation sets of already existing tunes such as Bonnocks of Beer Meal".

Last reel of the set?
BTW, does anyone know what's the name of the last reel played on the CD after "The Perrie Werrie"? Thanks.

Sorry I can't help, as we haven't the CD.
Unfortunately this transcription still remains a mess...

BANNOCKS OF BARLEY MEAL [2].
It's on the Fiddlers Companion under
BANNOCKS OF BARLEY MEAL [2].
2 versions given
If you can change the title I would do so - Bonnocks is a historical spelling but not the usual historical spelling, and not the contemporary one either.
I've seen it as Bere Meal and Beer Meal, both of which mean Barley Meal.

Bere bannocks - how I miss them. An Orkney speciality. Around two parts beremeal to one part wheat flour is to my taste. Mind on the kirn milk (buttermilk) and the soda for a good rise.
Gregor Lamb, the Orkney poet, used to tell of a conversation he overheard between two ladies from the north of England. It went something like: "Ee, we 'ad a great time. We 'ad some of them bare buttocks for wuz tea.
