Lady Lane
This wonderful jig, which is my favourite Irish tune of all time, was composed by Belfast uilleann piper John McSherry, and was recorded by him in the album "At First Light" with Michael McGoldrick. In our redordings section it appears under the title "Lady Jane", and unfortunately it's a mistake, as this composition has only one version so far
The title originates from the name of the street in which John has once lived.
I learned it from the composer himself. I mean, I knew what it sounded like before, and loved it ever since I first heard it, but I didn't want to learn it alone for fear of making mistakes. But, not so long ago I had the great honour of meating John here, in Israel, and he taught me to play it, and was very pleased when I wrote down the notes.
You see, he arrived here on the 7th or 6th of October for a number of concerts with a local band, Irish Cream, and since I adore him with all my heart, and since he remembered me from an Email I sent him 4 months before, I managed to spend a lot of time with him in the local pub and talk with him (and entered to two of the concerts as well; they were terrific), and he suggested to give me a few tips on the low whistle and to teach me "Lady Lane". So on Saturday afternoon I went to the hotel he stayed in, and we sat is his room for about 20-25 minutes and I learned it.
He's a wonderful person and a very good teacher and now I admire him more than ever. It's really fantastic to meat and spend time with someone that you love, someone who has inspired you. I didn't deserve the honour, really. And after the last concert, after which he had to take his flight back home, I couldn't say goodbye and burst into tears, and he embraced me and promised to come back.
I miss him so much.
