This is a fun tune by Michael McGoldrick.

Lovely tune. I'm in the midst of learning it. I was told the name of it was 'Morning Rory' (sp?).

This tune is called Trip to Herves. The album title is "Morning Rory".

The more I hear this tune the more I loathe it. The 1st part's okay but the 2nd part is really annoying, particularly that syncopated bit at the end. When someone starts it up in a session I get a panic attack when and feel claustrophobic, and get the urge to suddenly leap up and rush out of the room, lashing out and roaring at the other musicians as I leave.

This tune came up in almost every session I was at in Ennis.

It has a Dow repellant installed in it. This could explain why we've never seen Dow in Ennis. :-D hahaha

Resist it Jack! Once you weaken your defences against this "Ennis" tune, you open yourself up to hundreds of clone tunes, all with annoying syncopated bits, and all played by young trad idols who reach proficiency in their chosen instrument at 3 years old. Don't go there!

Annoyances

I can live with the 3-3-2 bars at the end. Its the gratutious B triplets that annoy me. I must go to one of Dow's session sin sydney and play this. I'd put up with the B's to see the lashing and roaring. Ever considered the Foxhunter's jig in 2-2-2-3 Dow? That might have an even more impressive effect.

The more I hear this tune the more I enjoy it.

Trip To Herves

This is the same tune on the 'Upside Down' album by Sharon Shannon, Mike McGoldrick, Jim Murray, and Dezi Donnelly. I think Mike starts with Lafferty's then goes into this reel.

I second Dow's comment on this tune: "The more I hear this tune the more I loathe it. The 1st part's okay but the 2nd part is really annoying...." I'll never ever bother to learn this. It won't stand the test of time, anyway.

Yes, Slainte. I think I'll avoid Ennis, then, and head for Tokyo for tunes instead :-/

When this gets played at our session, sometimes it gets a bloody stupid coda tagged on the end of it. This involves repeating that B2FA2EF2 bit a few times and then ending melodramatically on a low D like this: DEED EFGA|D4-D4-D4-D4. Problem is, some people don't anticipate that this coda is coming, and drop out of the tune, so the tune sort of peters out with only a couple of people rounding it off. When I hear it played like this, it rots me to the core.

As a protest against the playing of this tune, a friend of mine from Ireland rewrote the last few bars. Now that's how we play it when it comes up in a session, and we do it regardless of whatever anyone else is doing, much to everyone else's annoyance and my own amusement. My friend's last few bars goes something like |BF~F2 AF~F2|DEFD EFGA|BF~F2 AF~F2|(3Bcd AF EFGE||.

Fortunately I didn't hear this played when I joined a couple of sessions in Ennis weeks ago.

I strongly believe the composer wrote this tune just for fun and never expected a bunch of people to play it together in sessions. The first part is just fine, so the second part is all the more annoying.

By the way, it sometimes gets played in Tokyo. Sigh.... Farewell to Whalley Range is a good pentatonic tune though.

Yes. Farewell To Whalley Range is nice.
