The Brady Reel
This tune was apparently composed by a fella named Jim Brady. Don't know a thing about him. I learned it orginally from Larry Nugent and, like alot of his favorite tunes, it is somewhat obscure. This one seems to be more familiar to the old timer irish musicians on the south side of Chicago. Seems to be always known precisely as "The Brady Reel".
It is a gem of a tune in my view. Flirts interestingly between E minor (in the first part) and G major (in the second) much in the same way as Fermoy Lasses does. Also, the tune lends itself to interesting an rhythmic emphasis in the first bar if you put a pause after the first lick as i've attempted to notate. Yet, at the same time, the second part can be played more lyrically, especially when you lift of up to that tasty G on top, which sounds great if at times it is not rolled.

Changing key
As you say, it's a gem of a tune, and to make it even more alluring (especially for fiddle and banjo players), try playing it up a tone in the key of F# Minor, where it sounds even nicer.

Changing Key
Mmmm. Sounds interesting. I'll have to give that a try. Have any favorite sets that include the Brady Reel?

I was recently informed that this tune, the Brady Reel, also goes by the name of Palmer's Gate.

Name
Guys
This tune is called "Palmers Gate" and way well be called "Bradys" but it was not composed by Jim Brady.
It was composed by Joe Liddy, who I believe has a book of tunes.
He is from Leitrim I think.
I do agree however, it is a lovely tune.
I think its to be found on Mick McGoldricks ( First ? ) record.
where its called "Gan Anim"
Regards
Pat

Laverys
this tune can indeed be found on Mick McGoldricks album Morning Rory as laverys no1 which then goes into mulhaires or laverys no2 as he calls it
it is a very different brady's as the one on kevin crawfords album though

Nice set
palmer's gate and then martin wynne's #3 makes a nice set i've discovered. palmers gate exploits the e major in the lower octive where wynne's exploits the relative major (being g of course) in the upper side of the spectrum. i dunno, they seem to click...
b and c natural eight notes make good pick-ups into wynnes too...

John Brady
He was the senior all-ireland champ on flute in 1967. from Offaly. Apparently is still alive, and has a daughter by the name of Attracta who also won the senior all-ireland on flute in 1989.

I'd imagine that's a pretty Chicago setting, Will, since Jessica Ziegler's from the North side up there, and so were Matt and Shannon when they lived there...
