Around the World for Sport

Anyone know which sport we're referring to?

# Posted on October 4th 2002 by Kenn

Traveling around the world, I'd assume.

Maybe it was with a fridge.

I submitted this tune as a suggestion to play after Drowsy Maggie (discussions Oct 2/02).
Has a strong driving rythme, nice on the fiddle. (Guitar's go crazy!).

Rhythm, (can't spell).

Around the World with a Refrigerator For Sport, also known as More Power to Your Lumbar, or the Hernia Full of Stitches.
It's a good tune, Kenn.

Jackie Daly and Seamus Creagh have a slightly different version called The Rambler in Cork:

Around The World For Sport

I've always known this tune as With Sword In Hand.Isn't Around The World an alternative title for The Wise Maid? David Meredith

Different world

I think you're thinking of All Around The World which is an alternate title for The Wise Maid. It's easy to see how that could be confused with Around The World For Sport.

You could combine The Wise Maid, Sporting Paddy and this tune into a set and call it All Around The World For Sporting Paddy. :-)

Around The World For Sport/The Sword In Hand/The Cork Rambler

I know this one as "The Sword In Hand", also posted by Pants @ http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/1425. The O'Neill's setting of "Around The World For Sport" is very similar, but resembles more closely the jig that goes by that name: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/3149

It also resembles "The Rambler In Cork" posted by David. The 3 tunes/settings are clearly closely related.

Great

This song's great--and the Tony Hawks fridge references at the begining of this post only added to the enjoyment! Someone should create a jig or a ballad in honor of his adventures!

Twin jig

check the 6/8jig: The Leitrim Fancy http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/467
for stunning similarity.
The Bothyband played them in succession on 'Out of the Wind'.

False friend

"Sport" is an irish gaelic word and it means "have fun", in that case with music :)
