Cluck Old Hen

Can't believe this wasn't on here. Great tune, goofy words, not the best notes perhaps, but it will do. Look for it on Youtube for a better feel for the it. Mostly played on claw hammer banjo.

Lots of people play it on fiddles here....
Makes a good set with 'Home with the Girls in the MOrning' first....

I play this in cross A - never at an Irish session though...

Gosh, can't believe this one made it out here. We did it in A as a medley with Cripple Creek and Chicken Reel. B if we were feeling lucky (sans fiddler). Try the Animal Folk Songs for Children album by the Seegers for a really cool mix version on the dulcimer. I don't have the album on hand or I'd transcribe that take myself.

Three Hens Escape Oblivion

Canadian trad muso, Joel Fafard recorded this tune as part of a two tune medley on his CD, Three Hens Escape Oblivion. A smoking version on banjo, fiddle and bass.

Think I got it; this is the first time I've done an ABC without being able to see the dots.

For plucked string players, it also seemed to be marked for "slide" on the two notes that are played together (I presume this is intended to be done with eg. a guitar slide).

Looks like I did it wrong...

Those notes with a "1" after them are supposed to take up the whole bar.

Lyrics...not so goofy

Here's the lyrics. It's all code for sexual stuff, methinks.

My old hen's a good old hen
She lays eggs for the railroad men
Sometimes one, sometimes two
Sometimes enough for the whole damn crew

Chorus
Cluck old hen, cluck and sing
Ain't laid an egg since way last spring
Cluck old hen, cluck and squall
Ain't laid an egg since way last fall

My old hen, she won't do
She lays eggs and 'taters too
Sometimes nine, sometimes ten
That's enough eggs for the railroad men

My old hen, she's raised on a farm
Now she's in the new ground diggin' up corn
The first time she cackled, she cackled a lot
Next time she cackled, she cackled in the pot

Had a little hen, she had a wooden leg
The best darn hen that ever laid an egg
Laid more eggs than any hen around the barn
Another little drink wouldn't do me any harm
