The Dun
Here's a weird little tune I got from the playing of Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh. You can listen to him forever and it's not really the matter of what he plays, not even of all those different variations. It's the way HOW he plays, all the possible sweetest and strangest sounds he gets out of the fiddle with bowing, different finger pressure etc. etc. Well that's also the reason it's useless to try transcribing such playing because the notes won't show even half of it all, but I loved the tune itself, so here we go. I also tried to hint at some fancy variations but you might as well leave them all out, play the tune plain and then see what comes out of it!

Also I still have no idea of its origin, so if any related tunes exist... you know, ~ "c"

The Chorus Reel
This is "The Chorus Reel" as played by the Sliabh Luachra fiddlers. I'm sure it's on the site already somewhere.

Paddy Cronin
I'm pretty sure C O'R got this from the playing of the master, Paddy Cronin. I got it from a recording done for the show "The Pure Drop" which was never broadcast that C gave me. Paddy Cronin calls it the Dun or the Doon.

Whoa! That was simply a question of spelling... Why, I've seen 'The Doon' listed on some albums before but didn't realise that's the very same reel. Thanks, guys! Nico, I'm also pretty sure Caoimhín got it from Paddy Cronin and by the way he was also teaching a couple of tunes from the playing of the master this summer at WCSS. If only I could get some early recording of his... They say the only album by Paddy Cronin is long out of print. Any chance I could get this show as well
? Thanks anyway.

Paddy in the Smoke and Doon reels
"Paddy in the Smoke," which is available from Topic, includes a live session rendition of this version of "The Chorus Reel" by Con Curtin and others.
There are a number of "Doon Reels" from Sliabh Luachra. The name comes from Doonasleen, Kishkeam, the home of Padraig O'Keeffe's uncle "Cal" O'Callaghan. So some of the "Doon" reels are also called "Callaghan's" or "O'Callaghan's."

I got a very helpful reply from Nico and I'd love to share it with anybody interested: some 15 tracks from 78s of Paddy Cronin can be found here:
