Glenburnie Rant

Learned this at the Folkworks summer school in Durham, Uk.
Online resources say it is a "very old scottish reel" composed by Neil Gow.

One source said it is an Irish rant, also known as Kilburney's Rant.

I dont think there is such a place in Scotland called Glenburnie (at least not that google could find). There is however, a place called Glenburnie in Maryland, USA.

The Fiddlers Companion also had this entry:

GLENBURNIE RANT. Scottish, Reel. E Minor. Standard. AAB (Gow, Kerr): AABB' (Athole). "A very old reel (Gow)." Carlin (The Gow Collection), 1986; No. 258. Kerr (Merry Melodies), Vol. 1; Set 4, No. 4, pg. 5. Stewart-Robertson (The Athole Collection), 1884; pg. 246

For which the B part sounds somewhat similar.

Glenburnie rant

this version can be found in 'kerr's first collection of merry melodies' - try sharpening the 'd' in the last bar of the a and b part each time thro, which is how it is written in this version...

Glenburnie

Glenburnie is (was?) a hamlet in North Fife, near Newburgh, where there is a session, and a slow session (http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/2273). The tune was first published in Gow's fifth collection (1809), where it is annotated "A very old reel", indicating that it predates Gow by a considerable time - it was not composed by Gow. Gow must be the source for the later anthologies (Athole Collection, Kerr's Merry Melodies).

Glenburnie Rant

In his 'Scottish Mandolin Tutor' (Skye 2010), Dagger Gordon gives "Fight About the Fireplace" as an alternative name for this tune. That's the name of a dance which was published by the Gows in 'Five Favourite Country Dances' (1822), and to which "Glenburnie Rant" is played. There is another reel under the name "Fight About the Fireside" in C major - see 'Kerr's Merry Melodies' book 2.
