I'm sure this tune does have a name. I got it from Stephan Grossman, who played it with a few O'Carolan tunes. It sounds very much like O'Carolan; but I can't find it in any of his music books. It's a lovely tune to play on fiddle or flute.

I think that you are correct when you say that it is not one of the known O'Carolan tunes.
However, it does seem to have a structure and form very similar to "Lord Inchiquin", and I amost hear your tune as being a counter-melody to that one - although I haven't acutally tried it as such.
Could your tune be by O'Cathain, or one of the other 17thC harpers perhaps?
Or alternatively, it might be in one of the old lute tunebooks.

I used to play this in a group, and we knew it as "Thomas Leixlip the Proud" which can be found in O'Neil's Music of Ireland, in the O'Carolan section.

The first "A"s on lines one and two above should be "A2"s.

Thanks for putting in the amended ABC's, Nigel. My pet hate is seeing 6/8 waltzes.
