"Cliff's Edge"

This was written for my father, who died today, September 7th, sometime around 4 p.m., taken by cancer and mysterious effects, all without a doubt due to his history with tobacco. He will be missed by those that loved him, his family and friends. I would not wish the ravages of smoke on anyone. In my father's case one of the first of the worst was profound hearing loss, hearing loss for which nothing can improve on, total, no use hearing aids.

Anyone who stumbles across this who smokes, I would never judge you, it is a difficult addiction. But so many afflicted seem to think they are impervious to its effects. Do your damnedest to give up. It is a very unpleasant end, and it will ALWAYS get you in the end. I've yet to know a smoker who it hasn't eaten away at them, weakened them, rotted them from the inside out. For your family and friends, do your damnedest, get help if need be. Neither you or your family should suffer the eventual results of this addiction...

I wonder if my da ever actually listened to this...

Over the edge - R.I.P. - but unlikely...

As already said, smoke got me da - multiple cancers, the seed for it all being his lungs. The worst of it all was his brain stem... Sadly he never did master the use of his ears, but saddest of all is having left my ma with pain and confusion. That too is the nature of addiction, not thinking about others or consequences, or being convinced it will never get you, you're the exception. Well, in my life, not short, I've never known any smoker that wasn't made less by this addiction, less able, disabling, and so far all those that eventually did 'leave this mortal coil' went out by some disease associated with smoking, and mostly in unpleasant ways. For my friends who I try to get to consider giving up, I'm fed up with seeing the suffering, by the person smoking drags down and by the effects on others, friends and family. Do your damnedest, please, not just for your own sake. Stay around a little longer, for a few more tunes, please...

Seconded

Ceolachan, I was sorry to read this (I'd missed your earlier post) and I agree with you absolutely. It got my mother and aunt (her sister) too, the latter only in her sixties. She at least gave up, but my mother insisted to the bitter (and very painful) end that it had nothing at all to do with her habit. I've never smoked, except vicariously, and it makes me sad and furious to spot young girls flaunting fags in an effort to be cool. They'd laugh if I warned them,of course. It's one of my pet subjects for ranting.
