Bb Major isn't an option in the drop down menu, so I've chosen a relative key, C Dorian, same two flats...
Hopefully more will come soon, if not from me from one of you...
I'd have chased this up just for the tune title, but it was a welcome gift from a member here, a recording which included a slew of fiddlers learning this, a recent "Jink & Diddle" camp, which sounded like fun. As this tune filled my ears so did the thought ~ "I know that!" ~ but ~ I'm completely unfamiliar with this title. I'm assuming it is a composition and hoping for confirmation on that and who, hopefully soon. I was glad to be reacquainted with this one, though I remember playing it up a 3rd, in D. I'll add a transcription for it in that key later. It's probably also a good guess that I learned this while living on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, The Canadian Maritimes...
I have tried to find more information on this, and I've emailed my benefactor.

I've been having a hoot with this most of the day and despite not having all the information I'd prefer to have to share with regards to this tune, it was too much fun to just keep it to myself... I hope some of you have as much fun as I've had reacquainting myself with it, in both keys... Enjoy!

Just heard back from my source for this revival and they haven't any additional information to add. I'm still hoping, especially to find out the origins and meaning of the title. And if there really are monks out there sucking on balloons and doing liturgy or chant in squeaky voices I want to know about it. It might be my calling...

Origins of the Title
I first heard this tune some 5 or 6 years ago performed by the band Cliar, who at the time included Bruce MacGregor as fiddle player. It is included as a set called 'Bruce's Reels' on the CD I bought, sandwiched between 'Falun Aboot' and 'Braes of Auchtertyre'. The first two were written by MacGregor, the third is traditional.
The Sleeve Notes say
"Helium Desciples was written for a poor woman who took her religion just a little too far..."
