C: Donald MacLeod
This tune is usually played as a 6/8 March but when messing about with it one afternoon I found that it worked nicely as a reel.

This is a really boring tune

Dr.Ross's 50th
The best thing that could happen here would be for pipingtool to post the original great 6/8 march that Donald MacLeod wrote and then post this silly reel version in the comments.
Otherwise it should probably just go away.

Seconded...
I agree, up to a point. Nothing wrong with re-arranging a tune into a different time signature, but I don't think this one works particularly well. The original 6/8 is a classic pipe march. Whether or not it belongs here - decide for yourself. If you feel so strongly about it , MattO'K, the positive thing to do would be to post it here yourself.

6/8 march
Give it a go Matt, and if there are any worries about your ABCs you can always pass them over to Kenny or me or anyone else of your choice to check them before you submit the tune... I'd been thinking what you and Kenny have offered ever since this arrived... Where's the root to it? If this alternate take is going to be here, well, I personally think, out of respect, a decent take on the man's composition and original intent should also be fairly represented...

L: 1/8 ~ & nothing has been changed, these are your notes Matt
A few minor 'corrections' have been taken care of... It would be best to see other transcriptions before finally giving this one a place of its own. I'll have to see if I can get a listen somehow and then give it some time, try it on for size...

A Mixolydian ~ a change I would make
Matt, I've checked your transcription against a couple of other sources, the only differences being G/g natural, A Mixolydian, and a 1st and 2nd ending for the B (2nd) & D (4th) parts... It definitely plays for me as A Mixolydian... I've enjoyed the introduction, be sure to give it a place here on site of it's own, but if you prefer, after I've gotten comfortable with it, I will add it later...

Thanks for the transcription Matt...

Something associated ~
I like this march. Thanks for the introduction... I've been catching it here and there and giving it a try on various instruments. Here's something I stumbled across for the entertainment of others...

Wow! I'd want my bicycle helmet to do that, and even then I'd probably murder myself, or at least do me some serious damage...

I hope that's a reasonable take on it Matt... As said, I was particularly in the mood for marches this week and this was welcomed... Thanks...

Settings
Re-arranging 6/8 marches into hornpipes and reels has been a trend in pipe bands of recent years. I'm not immediately smitten by this particular example.
Ceolachan's march setting is the closest but is missing some things. On the technical side are the grips and taorluaths played on some of the quarter notes. These movements have a G in them. Also there are variations to the 2nd and 4th parts. Here is a more faithful setting that is friendly to other instruments. To be even more faithful one could play the terminating A2 of each part as A/A/A

Just a little different to Malcom's faithful post above. Why? Well it's how I come across it when I occasionally get the opportunity to play it with others and how I hear it when grabbing a handful of partner at a dance. Just dropping the G's in the 3rd & 4th parts sticking with the A's.
A good pal of mine has it that the third part of this tune, is the sexiest third part of any tune, took me a while to be convinced but I'm coming round to agreeing with that......... Especially when dancing.
