Tonight we pay tribute to flute player and composer Vincent Broderick. Vincent recently published another collection of his tunes called the Turoe Stone 2. Fiddler Antoin McGabhann and friends join Vincent and members of his family for tonight's celebration.

Vincent Broderick, 1920 - 07/08/2008
Born at Carrowmore, Bullaun, Loughrea, County Galway.
One of seven children, Vincent and his brother Peter, under the influence of their mother Ann's love for traditonal music, began playing on flutes given to them by a local priest. From their teens they were accomplished players, performing for house dances in their area, usually transported there together on the one bicycle. They were also to be found regularly in the company of the Rolands, Paddy Carty, Kathleen Harrington, Joe Leary and Joe Cooley. ~ Like many then and sense, Vincent left home and moved to Dublin for work in the early 1950s...

~ and ~ also where the mix up regarding the copper flute is repeated. It was Peter, not Vincent, who won the 1955 All-Ireland for flute in Loughrea, County Galway, with a flute he'd made out of a length of plumber's copper piping...
There is a lovely picture of this in the 2nd collection, page 4, Peter with his 1955 trophy and his copper flute, showing clearly as well the lip plate also formed from another bit of the pipe...
Vincent won the All-Ireland for flute in Athlone in 1953 & in Cavan in 1954...
