The Cave of many Colours

A great little "experimental" tune composed by Nancy Kerr. Recorded on "Between the Dark and Light" (Nancy Kerr & James Fagan, with Alan Burton: uileann pipes) and on "Crame on" by FIANNA (also with Alan Burton on uilleann pipes). Learned recently from my Dutch musicial mates Gert Camfferman, Marc de Roos, Jeroen Hogeveen and Tets Halbertsma (all from Utrecht based band HIPES).

Please do not feel irritated by the tune species, I haven't a clue what "three-two" stands for, but certainly this tune offers a variety of broken rhythms and I couldn't spot any better category offered in the session.org mask, sorry...

The notation on the front page here is, as I feel the tune is phrased. If you like it better, here is a alternative notation in strict 7/8 time - which is the basic signature, if you sum everything up.

The accompaniment by James Fagan - while being absolutely impressing - doesn't make decisions on the basic rhythm easier - it is rather tricky!

Whichever way you see it, the fun comes with the playing of the tune. The recording of the composer(s) also includes a bridge, consisting of an enthralling chord progression and later for the final repeat of the tune comes up with a really brilliant second voice for the fiddle not transcribed here yet.

The tune was written by Nancy for Alan Burton's wedding - named after a cave of many colours somewhere on the cornish coastline
