"John Murphy's Slide"

This is the slide that Dow/Mark brought to my attention recently, which I hadn't a name for but Brendan Begley does, the title given. I've known it in several ways over time. I've given it first as I've known it, in the lower key of D and with a return to the A-part's ending ~ then, the second time, as it was sent to me by Dow/Mark, with full beat lead-ins and without the return to the ending of the A-part. There are some other differences worked in as well...

As is true of much of this music, there is usually more than one possibility with a tune. Sometimes the variations and treatments become so distinct that they qualify as a different tune...

Hi 'c' thianks for submitting this but you should have left out my unreliable transcription. It was half-remembered, half-baked, and I missed out the 2nd ending by accident. Can you at least add it into the abc of the G setting?

# Posted on November 25th 2007 by Dr. Dow

I mean to say that my original source (session recording) has the B-part 2nd ending, like yours.

Heh, heh, heh... Mea culpa! The hair shirt is on my back for putting so much trust in your genius... :-D

"John Murphy's Slide" ~ Mark's take with his requested correction

I've only ever known this as another 'gan ainm'... So it might make some sense, I'll leave the mistake in the ABCs or the first transcription for your G Major take, so folks know what this is about. So here follows yours with correction, and then the same in D:

LOL, thanks 'c'. I'm just glad you got it right with your setting. And I like it in D too. I might start playing it in D myself. Can you remember where you picked up this tune, 'c'? Maybe some sessions in Ireland somewhere? Or was it from a recording?

They come two ways with me, playing them and dancing to them. I suppose, being dyslexic, that makes them hold in my memory better, but I also tended to write everything down too, in ABC's, but I didn't always remember where I'd left some beer matt/coasters or scraps of paper. ;-) I lucked out and got to play with some great musicians across Southwest Eire ~ West Cork, Kerry, Tipperary, Limerick... I even, God forgive me, did my first full blown job as a Comhaltas adjudicator ~ over worked too. They were short judges and so I took a slew of categories, including, and this will get you ~ bagpipes, highland bagpipes. And the one contestant, a young man, was brilliant. In this case, even though he was on his own competing, he deserved 1st place...

Anyway, that won't help you. Some of my notes aren't here, others were destroyed... I did a quick look though before submitting this, but nothing other than old ABCs... However, memory kicking in, this one I actually think I first picked up in Dublin, playing regularly with a box player from the region for dances just off the Liffy, over near the railroad, on the North side, John Eagan? Not sure, but it is the recording I was telling you about, the one I couldn't find. I'm pretty sure it is on that, but I suspect that is with my original field recordings. He was a brilliant dance musician and a great character. It was one of my favourite weekly sessions because of him in great part, and the regular dancing... I'll keep looking and let you know.

# Posted on November 25th 2007 by ceolachan

How about that: I actually *asked* you to namedrop ;-)

# Posted on November 25th 2007 by Dr. Dow

The weekly session mentioned was in a hotel on a corner, in the bar, but while I can visualize the place and the people, I can't remember names right now, except as suspected above. When I wasn't out galavanting about, and was there in Dublin, I probably caught a session or dance and/or classes/workshops, every night. There were three or four sessions I regularly attended, including this favourite mentioned, which had a strong leaning toward Sliabh Luachra music and dance... It just flashed that the hotel name might have had something to do with the nearby railroad and station? I can see the box player, a grand sweet man and a fine player, but I don't think he ever recorded commercially, and yet, I'd say he was better or as good as some who have.

The North Star

Could it be 'The North Star'? Directly opposite Connelly Station AKA Amiennes St

# Posted on November 26th 2007 by Alancorsini

Thanks Alan, that is ringing bells. Check your email. I should have dropped you a line first...

# Posted on November 27th 2007 by ceolachan

It is more than ringing... Are there still sessions there, dancing? Did you ever take part in them? Do you remember the resident box player? After your mention, I remember the sign on the side? ~ out over the sidewalk and road, and yellow? That might have just been the street lights. Last time we were in Dublin I tried to find the place but didn't. It was definitely the NE side of the Liffey...Eden Quay, Abbey Street, East of O'Connoll Street? Beresford Place? ~ fond memories...

# Posted on November 27th 2007 by ceolachan

Alan, any chance of a picture? I probably didn't find it because I kept too close to the Liffey when we went looking for it...
