This tune started falling out of my whistle in early May 2007, and finished itself in just a couple of days.

It is a nice tune.
It doesn't sound Irish (at all) and, strange as it might sound, I feel that 'reel' doesn't describe it well either; it feels more like a...waltz!

Whence the title?
According to Matt Cranitch, Dennis Murphy's fiddle had a gargoyle carved on the end in place of the usual scroll.

Gargoyle
I don't think it was a gargoyle, he played one of those Mittenwalder Steiner copies that were popular in Ireland because they were thought to be louder than your average fiddle. They had lion heads instead of a scroll.
Actually have one in the house myself, although I am not completely sure where it is.
