I just learnt this excellent 4-part mazurka off Altan's Runaway Sunday, where it is entitled simply "mazurka". I read elsewhere that this is the mazurka entitled "John Doherty's" on Tommy Peoples' Master Irish Fiddle Player CD, but I can't confirm that as I don't have that recording (can someone confirm this pls?). Parts 1 and 3 are exactly the same, and in G. The 2nd part is in D, and the last part in C. You can hear a clip of the last 2 parts at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Runaway-Sunday-Altan/dp/B000000WEL/ref=m_art_li_7/104-4200504-6991911.

Don't know much about the difference between waltzes and mazurkas, but the last part seems more waltz-like to me. Maybe someone else can clarify.

Also the last tune on track 15 of Kevin Crawford's In Good Company.

I must apologize for dropping a clanger. I mistook this tune for another Tommy Peoples' mazurka (the one composed by him)
http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/1302. I went and added the to the alternative titles list the rather ambiguous title of 'Donegal', used by Eamonn Coyne on 'Through the Round Window', thus adding another swathe of red herrings to the already oversubscribed recordings list - as if there aren't enough recordings of tunes called "Tommy Peoples'" that aren't this one. TheSession's inter-database software will now have us beieve that there are no fewer than 56 recordings of this tune.

"Mazurka - Waltz" ~ another species in the family...
You'll love that Dow...
I know this one well, but now to remember from where. I suspect another tradition is involved...

It is still gnawing at me, because like you I've known it for ages, but I didn't get it from Peoples or any of his recordings, and I had a different take on it too... I'll have to give yours some time now what?!!? Thanks for the added transcription, appreciated.

I picked it up in the North and I have a sneaking suspicion that possibly from Con Cassidy? Now if only I can find notes or a recording...
# Posted on April 30th 2007 by ceolachan
I am also sure I've come across this one in North America too, possibly another one of those mouldy old collection again?

You can tell it will be a restless night for me tonight...

Damn you Dow...

It's in the 'Kerr's Collection' under the title 'Mazurka' (p 38 in my edition) so sorry I know that doesn't help much but it could indicate that it was originaly a scottish tune.

Also, I can't do ABCs so I can't put up the version, sorry again! I'll bring it up to Goulburn, Dow!

Johnny Doherty's Mazurka
This mazurka sounds vaguely like the mazurka in "D" played by Tommy Peoples on his fiddle tutor tape and notated in the accompanying book as Johnny Doherty's. The mazurka in question is on the Yellow Board at http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/1323.

John Doherty's
Although this is one of "Tommy's" mazurkas on the Kevin Crawford CD, I've decided to submit it by the title John Doherty's, since that was apparently Tommy Peoples' source for his Master Irish Fiddle Player recording.

"Kerr's Merry Melodies" ~ that figures!
Thanks sneetch, that makes a lot of sense. The Kerr collections got a lot of circulation in Ulster and were responsible for introducing a number of tunes... They are also a great eclectic collection. I wish I had my set on hand to check it. If you scan the tune and send it to Dow he can forward it to me. That might answer the niggles in my brain. I still think I may have also come across it in an old dance tome from the 1800s. I had a slew of those but lost the graphics when I had a recent disaster with a new hard drive. I will keep looking.
This is also played lower down, as D / G....

I should explain 'eclectic', the Kerr collections did not limit themselves to things Scottish...

"Kerr's Collection of Reels and Strathspeys" ~ for piano
I checked Nigel's site to confirm the source... It's not "Merry Melodies" but the book given above, which also has an arrangement of the Varsovienne...
