You could also raise the c in the first measure of the B-part, etc. ~

Damn you're quick Hiro... I didn't even get to catch my breath...

I was just getting around to it. I'm glad I moved about and didn't keep this window open or we'd be cross posting the same information...

You are a gem, valued comment ~ thanks for beating me to it... ;-)

The first did make me pause, and I'd also call that a 'march' transcription ~ but this is different enough to that one in the B-parts...

& in general, being minor instead of Dorian...

Z-mode =

My eyes are dim, I cannot see, I have not got my brain with me ~

Me being distracted, semi-functioning and mono-dexterous ~ a zombie. While we were chatting over whether or not to go to Sardinia for a tuppence, I was blind and did not have my mind on the business at hand, this transcription. We then took off to the countryside and on the way my OCD kicked in ~ "Wha? ~ minor my arse!" Yes, this is definitely DORIAN... Apologies for not having my mind on the business at hand...

DORIAN! ~ K: A Dorian for the above ~ mea culpa!

With regards to the transcript given above starting the 'Comments', it is also Dorian. A Dorian in this case, like the rest of the family... I can't believe I was so distracted and quasi-conscious this morning, especially with the two related tunes being keyed correctly, as Dorian...and it so obviously sounds Dorian, not minor... I wonder how long I'll have to wear this hair shirt?

This March is clearly related to the reel, Locheil's Awa' Tae France (or Lochiel's Awa' tae france), from the Highland and Nova Scotia fiddling repertoires.

There's also a 6/8 march (unrelated to either of the above), Locheil's (or Lochiel's) Welcome To Glasgow, composed by Alexander Cameron. The Locheil (or Lochiel) in these titles was Donald Cameron of Lochiel, a Highland Chief about which you can read more here: http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/item/item_illustration.jsp?item_id=2139

I've posted the reel here:

And sadly drew my attention on a day I am worse for wear and short on consciousness, for whatever reason. :-/

Lougheil & Lochiel

Note: Lougheil & Lochiel are nae the same, one is in Ireland and the t'other is in Scotland...

# Posted on March 4th 2007 by ceolachan

Aye. But these titles get adapted to blend in with their surroundings. Tis nae coincidence that the tunes and the titles bear similarities.

# Posted on March 4th 2007 by CreadurMawnOrganig

It appears that Lochiel is an older spelling of Locheil, or Loch Eil, near Fort Willam.

# Posted on March 4th 2007 by CreadurMawnOrganig

Aye, Fort Wilam, remember it well... Maybe we can get twisted over this later with a wee dram and more of the grog? I wish there was a cross-eyed smilie on this site I could use right now...

I don't know spoon, I have the utmost respect for you, but even under various influences I don't see the melodic relationship between these two melodies. Now, at a stretch, I could waffle one up, but I'm at a loss finding it in obvious and less obtuse ways, and I've been playing the two tunes in different keys and even in sets with one another, but I can't hear it... :-/

But I'm glad both tunes are here...

# Posted on March 4th 2007 by ceolachan

I'm surprised you can't see/hear it, C. The main thing that sets the bells dinging for me is the f2d2d2 at the end of both the A and B parts of this - cognate with the "gee" at the end of Lochiel's Awa'...

The best way to demonstrate, short of playing the tunes, is to place the abcs side-by-side (or one-on-on-top-of-the-other, due to the limitations of this text edit), transposed into the same key.

So, here is The Lougheil March, transposed into A dorian:
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
R: barndance
K: Ador
g>f |e2 A2 e2 A2|e>^de/f/g g>e=dB|G2G2 Bc/B/AG|B2d2-d2g>f |
e2A2 eAA/A/A|e>^def g2 d/c/B | A3AB2 B/A/G |g2e2-e2 :|
|: ge |d>cde g2 ge | a>baf gfed | g2 e2 fede | g2 e2- e2 e/f/g |
a2 fa g2 eg | f2 d/e/f edcB | A3 A Bc/B/ AG | g2 e2 e2 :|

And here is Lochiel's Awa Tae France in A dorian:

M: 4/4
L: 1/8
R: reel
K: Ador
g|eAA/AA e2dc|BGG/G/G BEEa|eAA/AA e2dc|BGAG geeg:|:
dega bgab|gdd/d/d gdde|dega bgab|gee/e/e geeg|
dega bgab|gdd/d/d dega|bgae degd|BAA/A/A geeg||

I'm making a right mess of this. Here is a corrected version of the reel:

T: Lochiel's Awa' Tae France
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
R: reel
K: Ador
g|eAA/AA e2dc|BGG/G/G Bdda|eAA/AA e2dc|BGAG gee:|
|:g|dega bgab|gdd/d/d gdde|dega bgab|gee/e/e geeg|
dega bgab|gdd/d/d dega|bgae degd|BAA/A/A gee||

The reel proceeds at twice the pace of the march, in terms of net melodic motion. So, bars 1-2 of Lougheil correspond to bar 1 of Lochiel, the key pointers being the 'g' pickup note and the subsequent descending 5th (e-A). Bars 3-4 of Lougheil correspond to bar 2 of Lochiel, evident in the movement between B and G, then B2d2d2 in Lougheil vs. Bdd in Lochiel.
Bars 5-6 of Lougheil correspond, in a similar way to bar 3 of Lochiel. Bar 7 of Lougheil contains the same notes, in a different order, as the first half of bar 4 of Lochiel. Then comes the unmistakeable g2e2-e2, which corresponds to the second half bar 8 of Lochiel.

The correlation between the B-parts is a little less obvious since Lougheil has a simple AABB structure, whilst Lochiel has AABB', with bar 7 differing fundamentally from bar11 (and minor differences between bars 6 &10, 8 &12). Bars 13-14 of Lougheil would seem to correlate most closely with bar 11 of Lochiel. corresponding bar (9) of Lochiel. There is a clear correlation between bars 9-10 of Lougheil and bars 5 & 9 of Lochiel, bars 11-12 and bars 6 & 10, bars 15-16 and bars 8 & 12.

In short, if you drop half the notes out The Lougheil March, then play it at twice the speed, you get something resembling Lochiel's Awa Tae France.

Try it.

I think the flood gates are open? The poor little Dutch boy has been washed away... ;-)

I've just noticed that even my 'corrected' version was incorrect. Good thing this is a dead thread.
