Different cat

Not the reel played by Frankie Kennedy on an “Altan” recording, neither the jig played by John Carty. Mich Neilsen – who lurks about these parts – may have to help me with names here. Several years ago, Mich sent me a recording of 2 Danish musicians who played Irish music on flute / whistles , and harp, and played it very well, too. I can’t remember their names, but this was 1 tune which was played on whistle, and I haven’t come across it anywhere else in the best part of around 20 years. The “ddd” triplets at the start of the 3rd and 4th lines were played “tongued”, and may be personal variations by the whistle player.

I live about 75 miles from ireland. How come the Danes get the best tunes?

# Posted on January 30th 2007 by CreadurMawnOrganig

...actually, more like 100.

# Posted on January 30th 2007 by CreadurMawnOrganig

The fluter would be Henrik Bjørslev and the harper Joakim Friis-Holm. The two boys have been at the music for years and are among the best of a bunch of first class Danish players. The standard of Irish music played in Denmark is second to none. I recently submitted a whistle tune I picked up from Henrik's playing. He had no name for it so I put it under his name. I have heard this tune before, but that was probably from Henrik.

I saw Joakim Frijs-Holm with the Danish band Harp 'N' Drum in 1983 when they were touring Europe promoting their album "Return To Milltown". Good band.I still have the album,I think I'll pop it on to the turntable I haven't played it in years. Thanks for reminding me.

Thanks

Thanks, "Longnote" - I wondered if you might know who it was.
There's a nice jig from that recording which I must post soon, as well.

Sorry.............

Especially to the 12 people who have this in their tune-books. Wrong animal, wrong thing it ate. There is another tune by this name, but it's a jig, unrelated, as far as I can tell.

Cow that Ate the Blanket

Aly Bain, Mike McGoldrick, and friends give this a different twist as the first of two reels recorded for the Transatlantic sessions here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-ya-fSRduI&feature=related

Different tune, Will

I'm assuming you're referring to the very 1st reel Will, and apologies if you're referring to something later. I'm not watching through it to see if that's the case. With all due respect to the players involved, I can't stand "The Transatlantic Sessions", but that very 1st reel is "The Milky Way", not "The Cow..."

Er, yep. Was just following the thread that linked to the youtube clip. And it is the Milky Way.

Oh well, maybe Jeremy can clean up this mess.

25 people now Kenny, so what is the name for this reel? :-/

# Posted on January 23rd 2012 by ceolachan

Sorry, "c"...

Need to explain - I had originally posted this under the title "The Cat That Ate The Candle" - Jan 29th - but realised I'd got that wrong and corrected it on Feb 4th. [ see above ]. Henrik and Joakim recorded the tune as "The Cow That Ate The Blanket". There is a jig with the same name, but the 2 tunes aren't related in any way that I can see.

Whether it was the cat or the cow, it keeps the vet busy.

Thanks Kenny. I suspected as much...
