McGoldrick's

Maybe I should have put the Key to G lydian, as this tune has a very "G-ish" feel to it. Ah, too late now - I picked this tune up from a recording of a Chicago Area session that a friend mailed to me. McGoldrick is known for fun although not very traditional tunes. This one seems traditional enough for me.

I've just found this tune is already available at Helga's tune book and was surprised it's recorded by Scottish band, Deaf Shepherd. Although they play it as a nameless tune, this is definitely Michael McGoldrick's composition, considering Clare McLaughlin, a fiddler with the band, picked it up from a bonjo player from Manchester.

I personally feel his tunes are traditional enough if compared to average modern compositions. No one could disagree that "Farewell to Whalley Range" is a great slip jig. It's available at IrishTunes.net.

McGoldrick Live Recording

You can hear and see Mr. McGoldrick play this tune live on Kate Rusby's "Live In Leed" DVD in the song "I Courted A Sailor". He is accompanied by John McCusker here as well, and what a great tune! At the end of the song Kate Rusby introduces it as "Snoring Khazi", and alludes to what sounds like an interesting story about the title. I would love to hear that story!

This tune doesn't have a title, I asked Mike about it and he never did put a title on it. Mike and Dezi Donnelly played it a lot when they were in Toss the Feathers, he wrote it quite a long time ago. It's usually played in A. I suspect the "Snoring Khazi" is just a joke, but perhaps it's now called that since the Kate Rusby incident.

Snoring Khazi - By Michael McGoldrick. Transposed as faithfully as I can make out from the performance of it with Kate Rusby and her band as part of the song "I courted a Sailor". This is the first time I have used ABC notation, so I hope it works out OK. Apologies to Mr McGoldrick if it's wrong.... He should play slower... :-)

And it is a major key. From memory I think it is played in F in that performance to fit the song. It was written in D though. Nice tune.
