Mac Laine of Loch Buie

A cool pipe reel learned from Ashley MacIsaac. The version I've posted here is a mix of several versions I've heard, with my own touch.

Other versions

errik, is there any chance you could either give us ABC's on the other versions or point me in the direction of them, preferably in written form. Thanks.

MacLaine of Lochbuie

from "The Fiddler's Companion" website. Looks to me to be more like the original. Over 20 years since I played this.

I'd have to agree with Kenny regarding the fiddler's companion version as being the version that's the same or similar to the one I'm familiar with. Here's how I'd be inclined to score it:

e2 de A3B | g2 fg BGBd | e2 de edea |[1gedB BAA2 :|[2gedB A3 e ||
a2 ag aeef | gage fdcd | eaag aeea | gedB BAA2 | a2 ag aeef | gage fdcd |
g2 ag geea | [1 gedB A3a :| [2 gedB A4 ||

Learned by a friend through the playing and teaching of the Piper, Davie Garret. The spelling often confused with MacLean. My sources tell me however that MacLaine & MacLean, although closely related and both hailing from the Isle of Mull, are in fact different families. In the case of this tune it's the former that is correct, MacLaine of Lochbuie, as opposed to MacLean of Duart.

Davie

Davie Garret - now there's a name from the past. By an amazing coincidence, I came across a recording of him playing 2 polkas on a cassette tape from 1981 yesterday.

Aye, Kenny. Davie. Haven't seen hide nor hair of him in a good few years myself. I came across his Scottish Whistle tutor a few weeks ago online and was pleased to see that it was still available. Good player.

Davie plays with Balaich Lios Mor, and usually does the sound engineering for gigs in Lismore public hall.
